Four Ways to Stay Positive During Uncertain Times

Many of us are navigating days filled with distressing headlines, concern for our family’s health, and worrying about economic uncertainty. The negativity can be overwhelming. To counteract it, we can make a conscious decision to focus on things that bring more positivity into our lives. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Turn off the news and take a break from social media. Seeing negative headlines all day long can make it feel like there’s nothing good happening in the world. It’s okay to skip the news or stay off Facebook for a few hours or even a few days – the break with give your mind a chance to focus on other things.
  2. Make it a point to get in some physical activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Regular physical activity improves your brain health, helps with weight management, reduces disease, strengthens bones and muscles, and improves your mental outlook.” Take a walk early in the morning, or go for a late-evening bike ride – anything to get you moving.
  3. Reach out to a friend. Instead of following them on social media, pick up the phone and give them a call. Skip the text and have a conversation. Or plan a time to video conference and see each other ‘face-to-face’.
  4. Pick a new hobby or activity. If you used to read or do puzzles, give those activities a second chance. If you’ve always wanted to create artwork, there’s no time like the present to trying something new.

Use these uncertain times as an opportunity to focus on things that enhance your life instead of things that bring you down.
