Four Ways to Stay Positive During Uncertain Times

Four Ways to Stay Positive During Uncertain Times

Many of us are navigating days filled with distressing headlines, concern for our family’s health, and worrying about economic uncertainty. The negativity can be overwhelming. To counteract it, we can make a conscious decision to focus on things that bring more positivity into our lives. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Turn off the news and take a break from social media. Seeing negative headlines all day long can make it feel like there’s nothing good happening in the world. It’s okay to skip the news or stay off Facebook for a few hours or even a few days – the break with give your mind a chance to focus on other things.
  2. Make it a point to get in some physical activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Regular physical activity improves your brain health, helps with weight management, reduces disease, strengthens bones and muscles, and improves your mental outlook.” Take a walk early in the morning, or go for a late-evening bike ride – anything to get you moving.
  3. Reach out to a friend. Instead of following them on social media, pick up the phone and give them a call. Skip the text and have a conversation. Or plan a time to video conference and see each other ‘face-to-face’.
  4. Pick a new hobby or activity. If you used to read or do puzzles, give those activities a second chance. If you’ve always wanted to create artwork, there’s no time like the present to trying something new.

Use these uncertain times as an opportunity to focus on things that enhance your life instead of things that bring you down.

Three Effective Ways to Avoid Frustration and Get Employees Back to Work

As businesses begin to slowly reopen, some employees may not be ready to return to work for a variety of reasons including the $600 a week federal supplement that many laid off and furloughed workers are now receiving. Lack of childcare and fears of being exposed to the virus are also top of the list.

No business wants disgruntled employees coming to work.

Hiring and training new employees can be time consuming and expensive. So, what’s an employer to do?

  1. Offer returning employees a ‘return to work’ bonus. No one wants to willingly give up extra income, so a one-time payment may help employees feel better about losing the supplemental unemployment benefit and encourage them to come back to work.
  2. Allow creative scheduling, remote work and flexibility when possible. Since many essential businesses including day cares are not yet open, giving employees the option to work remotely or alternate days in the office can help ensure a smooth transition.
  3. Finally, try to assure employees that your business will continue to put safety first. Communicate health and safety protocols and support social distancing when possible. This helps employees feel confident about their transition back to work.

Encourage Your Sick Employees to Stay Home – Extra Preventative Measures to Safeguard Your Business.

There are several ways to help prevent the spread of germs and viruses in your business.

  1. Clean personal areas. Most people clean their phone and keyboards with disinfecting wipes regularly, but many forget the small things like file cabinets and door knobs. Encourage employees to consider everything they touch over the course of a day and to add a little extra cleaning time to their routine.
  2. Clean common areas. Shared surfaces like printers and copy machines harbor germs and may help to spread viruses from one person to the next. Other places like break rooms and coffee stations can become hubs of germs and viruses – taking down large numbers of employees with ease. Don’t assume that your cleaning staff is getting every surface.
  3. Remind employees to wash their hands. It can’t be said enough: employees should wash their hands several times a day with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Being diligent is the best defense against germs and viruses.

Being proactive can be the difference between having a few employees out sick versus an entire team or department. Letting your employees know you care about them more than the bottom line will help your employees to feeling good about staying home when they’re sick.

Tidbits that may be helpful for your team in 2020

Research shows that starting over has positive results. This is the reason why we come up with New Year’s resolutions – the key is following through.

In business, reviewing our achievements and failures is often an on-going process, but with the new year, we are more likely to slow down and reflect on our success. The following four tidbits maybe helpful:

1.         Setting goals: Research shows that documenting our goals makes it more likely that we’ll follow through with them. Periodic check-ins can ensure we’re on the right path and allow us to adjust as we go.

2.         Refreshing your jobs descriptions: Use the new year as an excuse to start fresh by reviewing employee’s responsibilities and workload. This can help determine who may be ready for a promotion and also shows which positions may be redundant or no longer needed.

3.         Continue cross training: It’s always important to have a back-up for every position. If an employee is out for an extended period or if they leave the company altogether, you’ll need other employees ready to step in and take over.

4.         Schedule performance evaluations: Plan scheduled meetings that will allow you to give employees feedback on their performance (typically every quarter or twice a year). Keeping an open dialogue can provide much needed feedback on what is working and what is not and can save may employee relationships concerning something you may not be aware of.

Heading into the New Year – Tips for your Business

Many people think of the new year as a time for a fresh start. As we wrap up 2019 and head into 2020, it is a good time to reflect on what’s working in your business and what areas can be improved upon. Here are some tips for starting the new year off right.

  1. Evaluate your success: Before making any changes in your business, it’s a good idea to review the past year and what has been working well. Continue with strategies that have proven effective.
  2. Identify one or two areas for improvement: Instead of making a long list of things that need to change in your business, start small with one or two key areas you’d like to focus on. Too many goals can be overwhelming and time consuming. Start with one, conquer it, and move on to the next.
  3. Plan ahead for your staffing needs: Throughout the year, there may be times when you’ll need to cut back on hours or hire additional employees.
  4. Anticipating needs ahead of time will keep you from ending up in a bind later on.

Careful planning will ensure your business heads into the 2020 new year on track for success.
